Protest March in Manokwari Held Calling for End to Death Sentence Against Karel Fatem

MANOKWARI, West Papua. August 31, 2026. The National Front of Papuan Students and Youth (FNMPP) held a peaceful march in Manokwari on Monday, calling for the death sentence against West Papuan political prisoner Karel Fatem to be revoked.

The action was held at the Manokwari Regent’s Office and proceeded to the West Papua MRP (Papuan People’s Assembly), where FNMPP submitted its statement of position and demands.

The group’s main demand was the release of Karel Fatem from the death penalty, with FNMPP expressing solidarity with Fatem, who is currently detained at Class IIB Sorong Prison.

FNMPP also called that the Papua conflict should be addressed within the framework of international humanitarian law and conflict resolution.

The group urged the MRP to follow up on its demands and said it would continue pressing for a response if no further action or information was provided. The action was carried under the slogans: “Free Karel Fatem” and “Reject the Death Penalty.”
