Six decades ago, on May 1, 1963, the administrative authority over West Papua was officially handed over from the Netherlands to the Indonesian government. Under the transitional rule by the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA), the status of West Papua has changed from that of a non-self-governing territory to that of an Indonesian trust territory.
Despite the assertion of West Papuans for freedom as distinct peoples, waving their own flag, building its own governing council and asserting their right to self-determination, the Indonesian government strongly claimed West Papua campaigning for its integration.
West Papua's destiny was managed without the West Papuans themselves. Under military intervention, tight political control, intimidation by force, and handpicked representative votes were obtained in favor of Indonesia's annexation in the referendum in 1969. Ironically, it was called the "Act of Free Choice” or West Papuans activists called the Act of No Choice.
West Papuan continue to cry Merdeka (freedom). And today, it must be the international community’s imperative to amplify their cry.
The call to acknowledge the struggle of West Papuan as a legitimate and rightful assertion of their right to self-determination, right to development and right to peace as peoples under colonial or foreign occupation must be a concern of every state, the United Nations, all institutions, movements and individuals who claim to champion peoples rights.
Let’s continue to push for an independent and international investigation of journalists, humanitarian groups, and the UN Human Rights Council on the continuing human rights abuses, violations of international humanitarian laws, extrajudicial killings and criminalization linked to the militarist approach of the Indonesian to resolve the West Papuan armed conflict.
As imperialist and local elite corporations such as Freeport, British Petroleum, and Korindo exploit Papua’s lands, water, resources and its peoples, let us unceasingly stand in the West Papuan call for their right to determine their own economic development, to benefit from the riches of their lands and protect their land, culture and environment.
The Merdeka West Papua Support Network enjoin everyone to endorse the Petisi Rakyat Papua (PRP) concrete demands to act on the dire human rights situation in West Papua and address the roots of armed conflict in the region.
It is much timely that the Anniversary of Indonesia’s Occupation of West Papua coincides with the International Workers’ Day. The fight to break the chains of exploitation of the working people and those oppressed by capitalist, colonial and imperialist domination is essential in forwarding the struggle for self-determination and freedom.
